An 11 year old girl suffering from Cerebral Palsy, who came to Cedarcrest Hospitals Abuja, on the 7th of June 2018 to see the Paediatric Orthopedic Surgeon Dr Sanya Adedapo. After examining and reviewing her case, the surgeon believed that surgery could remedy her condition. This condition had impeded Reliance from living a happy and fulfilling life, as she could not be the big sister to her younger siblings, nor move around and play with neither them nor her peers, she even had to drop out of school. Reliance has had to undergo continuous physiotherapy sessions for the past 11 years.
Cerebral Palsy also takes its toil not just on Reliance but on her family as well, her parents who had never heard about this condition until they experienced it. Her parents Mr and Mrs James Udochi were so worried and burdened with the financial demands for her treatment, this is a burden peculiar to most families who have children suffering from one form of disability or the other and this is why such families need you and I to be the help and support system they require. This is a burden they have been saddled with for the past 11 years; they have visited several media houses soliciting sponsorship and help, gone from one hospital to the other, sold their belongings in their quest for medical help. They even went as far as travelling to India in November 2010 and were told by the surgeons to raise the needed funds for the surgery and have a repeat visit for November 2012. However, they could not raise the funds for her treatment and could not meet this deadline.
6 years later, help finally came in the form of GAIUS Foundation. At one of Reliance’s numerous physiotherapy visits in March 2018 at one of the local hospitals, Cedarcrest Hospitals Abuja was referred to her parents. Taking into consideration the financial limitations of her parents, Reliance was then enrolled under GAIUS Foundation, granting her access to surgical care. With the help of GAIUS Foundation, Reliance was able to have surgery done on both her legs on the 2nd of July 2018, the smile on her face and the joy of her parents after the surgery is the reason why we exist as a foundation.
There remain so many children like Reliance who can be helped by our expertise and through GAIUS Foundation . We hereby appeal to every one of you to be the reason why a child smiles and lives to their fullest potential; be a source of hope and immeasurable joy to these vulnerable underprivileged families who are seeking such help like Reliance and her family did.
